Our Story

We met back in August 2006 during Welcome Week at Cal (University of California, Berkeley). Both entering Freshmen, we met on the dance floor in the basement of the infamous Aqua-Delt Fraternity. Called Aqua-Delt because they had a pool. After being friends for a year and roommates for another year, Walfre asked Greg out on August 23rd, 2008 and we have been together ever since. With many ups and few downs, we have stood together no matter what life has faced us. Walfre stood by Greg’s side during his mother’s cancer diagnosis and eventual passing in 2014. While painful, Greg is extremely grateful for all of the love and support that he got during that difficult period and especially for Walfre’s unwavering compassion.

From our first trip together, road tripping through the South from Charleston South Carolina to New Orleans Louisiana, to our latest trip throughout Turkey, we love to travel, see new places, and try new things. Food brings us together, whether it’s enjoying Oaxacan food, native to Walfre’s homeland, a German Spaetzle, or cooking a spaghetti squash with shrimp and peanut sauce at home, we love to talk about the flavors of food and the stories food tells. Walfre and Greg both share a love for Mexico and traveling to new places throughout the country.

For our last semester at university, we decided to study abroad. Walfre went to Bordeaux, France, and Greg went to Costa Rica, both in immersion programs to learn the languages there. Greg’s program, being more affordable, was much longer than Walfre’s program, and so with still three months left in Costa Rica and Walfre on his way home back to San Marcos, California, Greg convinced his mom to buy Walfre a plane ticket to Costa Rica, where Walfre and Greg stayed together with other study abroad students, in a duplex owned by a wild Tica (woman of a Costa Rica) and managed on less than $500 a month. We still got to hike the tallest mountain in Costa Rica and go on an epic road trip through the Nicoya Peninsula. This is when our relationship really solidified, and is when we met many of our closest friends that we still spend time with today.

After leaving Costa Rica, with only Greg having a part time job at ALKO Office Supply that he kept from University, and Walfre needing to find work, we moved to Oakland, California with Walfre’s friend from high school, Tony Castellaños. Walfre and Tony both got jobs at the fine Mexican restaurant, Tamarindo, and Walfre found work at the coolest, most slanted, and oldest bar in Oakland, Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon. This is the time where we built our community in Oakland, and have made many lasting friendships. During this time, we also got involved in the worker cooperative movement and founded a soap business called Co-Soap. This was a lot of fun, and though we had to fold due to lack of funds for growth, and gaining full-time career oriented work, it was an experience we will never forget. We still have the entrepreneur bug and hope to start a new business in the future.

We can hardly believe we’ve been in Oakland for 9 years, but are looking forward to what the future has in store for us. We want to start a family and can’t wait to begin that journey. We are so grateful for the friendships we’ve made and the family we’ve kept, here in the Bay and throughout the world. We look forward to celebrating the life we’ve lived and the future we’re heading towards with you.
